Sincerity does matter… – Next Orbit

It is amazing how often I have deliberated on this topic at various platforms. For me, it is not just a conjecture, but an essential building block in our professional growth. Today a professional is constantly trying to cope up with preposterously ambitious corporate world with global dreams, stifling socio-economic environment, and radically evolving technology. The entire work environment is going through a transformation. Companies are stumbling with constant struggle between (1) temptations of seeking unprecedented business opportunities across geographies and (2) to also remain sustainable in vulnerability of current economy and financial crisis. The complete scenario has an overwhelming impact on the behaviour and conduct of an individual at work. Moreover, the very sense of urgency encourages short-cuts and enticement to reward speedy results. Such unrealistic demands also lead to compromised processes and synthetic performance. Today a manager is investing most of his time in managing perceptions rather than doing a quality job. There is constant emotional struggle to prove his worth of existence in a corporation. Further, to remain visible to the power corridors of the system, a professional tends to compromise on his basics and what gets flattened most recurrently is the ‘sincerity’ towards performing his job.

How we define this as a concept?
In any establishment, we perform a role at a given position. We are in an organisation to discharge a purpose. A role is much beyond a Job Description and Key Performing Indicators or any such bookish measurements. A role, in my opinion, is the obligation towards the purpose for which a person is inducted in the system. The purity towards the role obligation characterizes our professional sincerity. When we do what is “Right” to do for that role and when we act according to our conscience. Evidently, there are many other factors too that are required to establish our professional growth like qualification, talent, skill, and the relevant experience. Nevertheless, it is the sincerity that will ascertain whether the talented professional will accomplish something credible as he ascends the ladder in corporate world. A young professional, after entering a company, soon discovers that his or her ethics, ideals, goals, core values, often contradicts with the internal practices. He very quickly learns to compromise with his basics to remain qualified in the corporate system. He learns to resonate with his current work environment and expectations of the superiors for his survival. The very enforced reconciliation then leads to an internal duel and encumbers his confidence to stand for “what is right” and soon he masters the art of “Window-Dressing”. His entire focus revolves around achieving ‘approving-nods’ from his superiors. That’s when he learns his first lesson on negotiating with his own conscience. His own personal integrity and professional uphold comes under emotional scrutiny. With all inner dissonance he learns to accommodate himself. Is it essential to compromise for the survival? The answer is big “No”. Majority of enterprises do have internal politics, camps, rivalries, and pampered egos. However, it is not necessary that an individual is admonished for adhering to his basics. But his own unrealistic aspirations and self-indulgence to mimic others reinforces him to adapt to available short cuts and imaginative faster tracks to climb the growth leader. Therefore, by the time a young professional reaches to the middle management level in corporate hierarchy, he is no longer confident of his own inner capabilities to multiply himself for steep and demanding competition for the top slots. In my career, I have counselled many professionals who got stuck at middle management level despite having brilliant credentials and lost it forever. Why such people get side-lined after rising so fast in their career? Why they do not remain the same professional anymore? The answer is in his systematic drifting from own convictions. What I call “Internal barrenness”.

How you preserve your professional sincerity?

We are responsible for our own destiny. My personal advice to the young professionals is to be honest, responsible and respectable towards self and the role. Learn to stand for your accountabilities and decisions. Excuses and manipulations are not going to lead you anywhere. Take complete charge and identify with the role. Do not evade accountability because of the fear of failure or sense of feeling besieged by the influence around you. You need to be straightforward at work with your choices. The buck stops at you. Career building is much beyond mere maintenance of the job and there is no point blaming things around us.

Enrich your fundamentals. It is important to incessantly renew your conceptual knowledge base. Subject matter understanding is an essential element of your professional triumph. Nothing can beat knowledge. Your ability to apply yourself at work will be directly proportionate to your self-sufficiency on fundamentals. I would propose all of you to plan a calendar to refresh your core subjects, brush-up your functional concepts and recent developments. Learn everything about your business and about competitors. You have to continuously transform repertoire of accessible information to amass your wisdom. Reflective knowledge is like having deep pockets of wisdom. It lightens your insight.

Plan – Prepare – Participate. Do not be casual in your professional life, every interaction is important and one has to be prepared well in advance to remain abreast. Any winning endeavour will require prioritizing, meticulous planning, and cautious preparation. You need to follow definite work discipline. At work place planning and preparations are an integral part of your professional life. More you invest in elaborate preparation that much your actual task becomes easier. Preparation and rehearsal will sharpen your edges. This can be a unique differentiating excellence in your personality.

Do not run around to get spotted. If you have in you then you will be recognized anywhere. No organisation can disregard a performer for long. Your sincere performance will unquestionably surface above the rest. In certain circumstances, it may take more than requisite time, but finally you will shine-out in midst of mediocrity and manipulators. Bring sincerity in your every effort. Your endeavours at work place should not be predominantly encumbered with desires, malice and ignorance. I do understand that in today’s life, we cannot just perform a duty without attaching rewards or benefits, but we can definitely avoid shaping our entire conduct around “what is there for me”. We should not incessantly equate our duties with the returns. Trust me; window-dressing is no substitute for the hard work of window-washing. Your top managers are not interested in ‘unfilled talks’. They value achievers. Deliver on your commitments and do the hard work. You will get noticed.

Negativity corrodes. Finally, I strongly believe in purity and positivity of thoughts. Thoughts drive our actions. Our behaviour is largely governed by our beliefs and thoughts. With purity of mind and positivity in thoughts, our overall conduct and disposition becomes largely acceptable to all around us. Negativity takes away your entire energy and time. It corrodes you from within. I strongly advocate for purity, endurance and determination in our life to attend quality of success. Be cognisant about your negative thoughts and circumvent renting any space to such negativity in your mind.

It is not easy and simple. Yes, it is very demanding to remain sincere in current work-environment. It may sound you very traditional and unadventurous. Perhaps definition of sincerity itself has gone through a transition in professional world. But any compromise with professional sincerity is not going to take you far. Why should you corrupt your own dignity for certain short term gains. You may go through some hiccups for a while. You may witness your career being cleaned out by others. Rest assured, in long term basis, you are going to be a winner. Don’t be artificial with your sincerity. Sincerity is inside you, it is not borrowed. Sincerity liberates you. It brings purity in our conduct. It makes you more observant and humble. You cannot accomplish incredible results by remaining episodic, manipulative, and reactive. You cannot be temporary in your predispositions. Sincerity gives us foundation and solidity. For your own contentment, look around and evaluate few achievers whom you know well. Probe them. At core of their success…. you will notice ‘sincerity’ towards work and the profession.

  • Dear Mr.Yagnik,

Your article is enriching and act as guide for corporate professionals.
    please accept my greetings.

It is true that sincerity and preparedness always pays and organizations can never afford to side line performers in long run.

Though professional managers in middle level are always in demand but they also sence neglection by senior managmenet on some core issues. and that feeling fuel negativilty, geopardise communication and some time switch over to alternatives.

wish you would enlighten on this.

    Best regards

  • The concept is good to understand but still the problem is unavailability of the skill set that is required.Just came out of an interview. It involves hiring a fresher for a particular section. The recruitment at any level for this section has been problematic…even the team members of the department donnot show the entusiasim needed and hav been behaving little casually towards the set responsibilities …The HOD has tyipcal nature of work and so cannot accept some ignorrant novice for the vaccacy as well..Is there any solution other then the cv hunting which is going on…???

    • Thanks for your mail and the query.
I am soon going to write on “how to select the winners”.
The best thing to support a growing organisation is to induct young fresh trainees for each vertical. Look at potential and not “how much he knows” for today.
Train them for your functional vacancies (Skills & knowledge both ). Select the best out of the lot (post intense interview) for the requirement.
It is difficult to get someone ready for the job.
Moreover, never recruit people for today’s gaps in organisation. it is always for tomorrow.
